NANTES, France – Consumers are being urged to exercise extreme caution when purchasing sunscreen online, following a recent investigation that revealed widespread counterfeit products offering no protection against harmful UV rays. Journalist Hugo Clément visited a specialized laboratory at the University of Nantes, where researchers analyzed a fake La Roche-Posay sunscreen purchased from AliExpress. Dr. Laurence Coiffard, a cosmetologist at the university, explained that while the counterfeit product appeared identical to its genuine counterpart in packaging, texture, and color, laboratory analysis, including SPF determination and chromatography, confirmed the complete absence of UV filters. "There is zero UV filter inside," stated Dr. Coiffard, emphasizing that the product was essentially "empty" of protective ingredients, containing only excipients like fats and water. This discovery highlights a significant public health risk, as individuals unknowingly applying these fake sunscreens would be completely unprotected from sun exposure, increasing their risk of sunburn, skin damage, and skin cancer. Experts advise consumers to purchase sunscreen exclusively from trusted sources such as pharmacies or reputable supermarkets to ensure the authenticity and effectiveness of the products. Scanning products with apps like Yuka before purchase is also recommended as an additional safety measure.
