Spanish Economist Warns of Housing Crisis Impact on Retirees and Criticizes Government Policy
Madrid, Spain – In a recent interview with Infobae España, economist Gonzalo Bernardos addressed the escalating housing crisis, pension challenges, and widening social inequalities across Spain. Bernardos emphasized the precarious situation of retirees who rely on rental housing, citing the significant reduction in housing supply as a major concern. 'The worst thing that can happen to you in life right now is to be retired and living on rent,' Bernardos stated, explaining that contract renewals become uncertain due to decreasing housing availability. He strongly criticized public administration for its perceived reluctance to construct official protection housing, questioning the logic behind hindering property owners, whom he considers part of the solution. Bernardos presented stark statistics, noting that housing starts plummeted from 725,000 in 2006 to a mere 33,000 in 2013, illustrating the severe decline in new housing development. He also took aim at political parties like Podemos and Sumar, accusing them of hypocrisy regarding tourism. 'They continue to travel abroad, yet they don't want anyone to come here,' he remarked, challenging their stance on the industry. Bernardos concluded by questioning whether such positions truly represent the left, highlighting what he perceives as a double standard.
