Montenegro Highway Blockaded: Solana Workers Demand 900,000 Euros
Former Solana Workers Blockade Ulcinj-Bar Road in Montenegro Ulcinj, Montenegro – On May 17, 2025, former employees of the Solana Ulcinj saltworks initiated a road blockade on the main Ulcinj-Bar highway, halting traffic for several hours. This action marks the culmination of a 12-year struggle for the workers to receive 900,000 euros in unpaid wages and social security contributions. The protesters, numbering around 146, claim that their demands have been ignored by the relevant authorities for years. They initially planned a protest at a nearby roundabout, but their request for permission was denied by the police. This denial, according to protest organizer Sasa Mitrovic, prompted the decision to block the highway. "After 12 years of fighting for what is rightfully ours, we have no other option," Mitrovic stated. The blockade caused significant traffic congestion, and police were present to monitor the situation. While the situation was tense, it remained peaceful. The former workers have announced their intention to continue the blockade, with plans for further protests in the coming days. The incident highlights ongoing labor disputes in Montenegro and the challenges faced by workers seeking justice for unpaid wages.
