Saharan Dust Cloud Headed for Guatemala: INSIVUMEH Issues Advisory Guatemala City, May 28, 2025 – The National Institute of Seismology, Volcanology, Meteorology, and Hydrology (INSIVUMEH) has issued an advisory warning of an approaching Saharan dust cloud. The dust cloud, originating in the Sahara Desert, is expected to reach Guatemala with peak concentrations anticipated on Thursday, May 29th. The advisory emphasizes the potential for respiratory irritation and other health issues, particularly for vulnerable populations. "This mass of dust is traversing the Atlantic Ocean and will affect our region," explained Ing. Luis Hernández of INSIVUMEH's Air Quality Section in a video update. He further noted that the dust is expected to begin dispersing by Tuesday, June 3rd. INSIVUMEH recommends the use of face masks and frequent handwashing to mitigate potential health risks. The institute will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates through its official channels. The advisory serves as a reminder of the annual impact of Saharan dust on Guatemala and the importance of preparedness.
