Loop Biotech is offering what they're calling a 'living cocoon' — a casket made of mushrooms and hemp. Here's how it works.
Maine, USA – A groundbreaking natural burial recently took place in Maine, marking the first use of a 'Loop Living Cocoon' mushroom casket in North America. Mark Ancker, who passed away at 77, had expressed a wish to be buried naturally under a tree on his wooded property. His daughter, Marsya, honored this unconventional request by utilizing a casket developed by the startup Loop Biotech. The 'Loop Living Cocoon' is crafted from hemp fibers and natural mycelium, the root system of fungi. Unlike traditional hardwood caskets and embalming chemicals, this innovative container is designed to biodegrade completely within approximately 45 days. This process not only facilitates the natural decomposition of the body but also enriches and improves the surrounding soil. Following the burial, flowers were planted above Mr. Ancker's resting place, intended to grow into a garden. This method offers a profound 'full circle' remembrance, allowing the deceased to become an integral part of the natural environment, nourishing the land and contributing to new life.
