Want an endless supply of fresh basil? This brilliant gardening hack will show you how to grow your own at home.
A recent online video by gardening enthusiast Jake Widmann has highlighted a straightforward method for maximizing basil yield, transforming modest plants into substantial bushes. Widmann, a self-described husband, father of four, and U.S. veteran, shared his technique for pruning basil, which he claims can produce "loads of fresh basil" from just a few initial plants. The method involves identifying the lowest leaf growths on a basil stem and making a cut about half an inch above them. According to Widmann, this encourages the plant to branch out, with two new stems growing from each pruned section. He states, "From each of those stems you will eventually cut them back to the lowest leaf growth as well. Do this for every stem on your plant and you will quickly turn that basil plant into a basil bush." The video also briefly covered various preservation methods for the harvested herb, including freezing, freeze-drying, dehydrating, and oil infusion, suggesting the versatility of the abundant harvest.
