Probably my favorite game in 6 years, here's too many thoughts and reactions to Disco Elysium.
A recent video by New York Times columnist Jamelle Bouie critically examines Senator JD Vance's stated influence from J.R.R. Tolkien's "Lord of the Rings." Bouie argues that Vance's interpretation overlooks the central theme of the fantasy epic: the corrupting nature of power. According to Bouie, the One Ring in Tolkien's narrative serves as a potent symbol of power's destructive influence, leading characters like Saruman, Boromir, and Gollum to ruin through their desire to wield it. Conversely, the true heroes of the story, such as Frodo Baggins and Aragorn, are depicted as those who actively reject the temptation of ultimate power. Bouie suggests that if anything, "Lord of the Rings" functions as a cautionary tale, offering a profound indictment of individuals who prioritize the pursuit of power, drawing a parallel to Vance's own political evolution.
