El especialista en automoción explica el hábito que alarga la vida del turbo y evita una de las averías más costosas en los vehículos modernos
In a recent online video, automotive expert Juanjo Jimenez, a mechanic from JC Automotive, shared crucial advice for car owners looking to extend the lifespan of their vehicle's turbocharger. The turbo, a vital component for engine performance, can be exceptionally expensive to replace, with costs ranging from 500 to 2500 euros depending on the car model. Jimenez highlighted a common oversight among drivers: immediately shutting off the engine after a demanding drive. He explained that the turbo's exhaust turbine can reach extreme temperatures, often exceeding 600 degrees Celsius. This intense heat directly impacts the oil lubricating the turbo's intermediate shaft. "If you turn off the engine immediately after a long trip or heavy use, the oil trapped in the hot turbo can burn and carbonize, leading to premature wear," Jimenez stated. He recommended allowing the engine to idle for at least two minutes post-drive. "This simple act ensures the oil continues to circulate at lower temperatures, cooling the turbo's components and preventing oil degradation," he added. Furthermore, Jimenez stressed the importance of regular and timely oil changes, along with inspecting the PCV valve, particularly in older vehicles, to prevent oil gases from contaminating the turbo's intake. These practical tips aim to help car owners save significant repair costs and ensure their turbochargers last longer.
