"You Have to Sacrifice" — Single Mom Explains How She Survives on Low Income in…
"Don't beat yourself up. Don't feel bad about it."
A single mother, known as Jess, has offered a revealing look into her daily struggles and survival strategies while earning $15 an hour in the current economic climate. With one son and no child support, Jess candidly admits that credit card debt has become an "unavoidable" reality in her efforts to make ends meet. In a recent video, Jess outlined several practical, albeit challenging, methods she employs to manage her finances. She stated, "I do not get my hair and nails done. You can tell, but it's just not in the budget, it's not a priority." She further revealed her decision to cut all subscriptions and even closed her bank account to sever ties with recurring payments, switching to a different banking service. Food security is a significant concern for Jess, who, despite her income, makes "too much to qualify for assistance by a dollar and 36 cents." As a result, she relies on food pantries and shops exclusively at budget-friendly stores like Aldi and Walmart, noting that "you are actually not getting a deal at Dollar Tree, you're better off going to Walmart." She also advocates for buying large jugs of water rather than bottled water and seeking out free resources like church donations and garage sales for clothes and supplies. Emphasizing the importance of stable housing, Jess underscored, "Rent is going to be your top priority. You do not want to lose your house." She acknowledged the difficulty of securing low-income housing, stating, "You're going to be on that waitlist for years." Her message resonates with many, as she concluded, "We are living in a fucked up economy... you have to sacrifice to make it."
"Don't beat yourself up. Don't feel bad about it."
