Romanian Parties Clash Over Next Prime Minister Amid EU Deadline Pressure
BUCHAREST, Romania – A political deadlock continues in Romania as major parties reportedly dispute the nomination of the next prime minister, with only two weeks remaining until a crucial deadline imposed by the European Union. The ongoing disagreements threaten to delay the formation of a new government.Sources indicate that the Social Democratic Party (PSD) is expected to propose their candidate for the premiership. However, the National Liberal Party (PNL) is reportedly unwilling to accept a rotational leadership model, as previously seen with the Ciucă-Ciolacu agreement.Florin Manole, a spokesperson for the PSD, stated, "We do not have a political negotiation at this moment." This highlights the current impasse in discussions.Meanwhile, the Save Romania Union (USR) insists that a prime minister must first be proposed before any economic measures are debated. Cristian Ghinea, a USR Senator, emphasized, "Decisions are made by the leaders, by the president, and especially by the future prime minister. My opinion is that this person must be nominated as quickly as possible, and only at that moment, with an assumed leadership of the future coalition at the prime minister level, can negotiations be resumed."The political factions are under pressure to reach a consensus to ensure stability and meet the European Union's requirements. The outcome of these negotiations will significantly impact Romania's political landscape and its ability to implement necessary economic reforms.
