A New Zealander has shed light on the economic pressures that led her to relocate to Serbia, citing the prohibitive cost of living in her home country. In a recent video, the individual, who identifies as 'kiwigirlabroad', detailed how everyday expenses in New Zealand, particularly in Auckland, made financial stability challenging despite a 'decent paying job'. According to her account, weekly rent in Auckland was approximately 300 Euros for what she described as a 'tiny little shoebox', with housing quality often suffering from issues like mould due to the damp climate. Food prices were also a significant concern, with items like ground beef, dairy products, and even basic vegetables such as cucumbers (6 Euros each) and paprikas (3 Euros each) being 'so expensive'. She recalled instances where she and her partner resorted to buying nearly expired food to save money. The cost of other goods and services, including a 20-pack of cigarettes at 30 Euros, pet bills starting at 50 Euros for a vet consultation, and expensive public transport, further contributed to her decision. While acknowledging that petrol prices were comparable to Serbia, she emphasized the overall financial strain. 'New Zealand was just so expensive,' she stated, 'and I just got sick and tired of spending all this money just to like, just try and survive.' She highlighted that purchasing property in New Zealand is 'never going to happen' for many, with an average house costing around 500,000 Euros. Her positive experiences during previous visits to Serbia with her Serbian partner ultimately solidified their decision to move.
