San Pedro Pelicans Soar Back to Ocean After Domoic Acid Poisoning San Pedro, CA – Dozens of brown pelicans, victims of domoic acid poisoning, were released back into the wild on Wednesday, May 28, 2025, marking a successful conclusion to a significant rehabilitation effort by the International Bird Rescue in San Pedro. The birds, suffering from the effects of the neurotoxin, underwent intensive care, requiring "so much work, intensive care, really long hours," according to wildlife center manager Kylie Clatterbuck. The release, captured on video by KNX News, showed the pelicans taking flight over the Pacific Ocean. "It's always so rewarding, especially with birds affected by domoic acid," said Clatterbuck, highlighting the dedication and effort involved in the pelicans' recovery. Ariana Gastelum, a communications and marketing associate at the rescue, added, "It's just amazing to see how resilient these birds are." The successful rehabilitation and release of these pelicans serves as a testament to the commitment of wildlife professionals and the remarkable resilience of nature.
