Minsk Pensioner Loses \$100,000 in Elaborate Phone Scam
In Minsk, an 85-year-old woman lost \$100,000 to phone scammers. The fraudsters initially posed as Energosbyt employees to obtain her personal information. They then contacted her, falsely claiming to be law enforcement officers, and convinced her that her data was at risk of being used for criminal purposes. To \"protect\" her information, she was instructed to hand over \$100,000 to a courier. The courier, a 64-year-old woman who had also been victimized by the same scammers, delivered the money to an unknown individual in a neighboring country. \"I was constantly under pressure,\" the courier stated, \"I was threatened with legal repercussions if I didn't cooperate.\" Law enforcement has launched a criminal investigation into the case. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of vigilance against sophisticated phone scams.
