Controversial Historical Narratives: Krešimir Rotim's View on Croatian Past and Present
Zagreb, Croatia – A recent video by online personality Krešimir Rotim has sparked discussion by presenting a highly nationalistic interpretation of Croatian history and contemporary politics. Rotim, known for his strong opinions, addressed reactions to his previous video on 1940s Croatian history, criticizing mainstream media outlets and political figures for their responses.In his latest commentary, Rotim focused on the 2001 sentencing of Darijo Kordić by the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) in The Hague. Rotim referred to Kordić as a "hero of the Lašva Valley" and questioned the historical framework used in the trial, specifically pointing to an expert witness, Roberto Donia, whom he described as a financial consultant. Rotim alleged that this framework falsely depicted Croats as planning ethnic cleansing of Muslims in Central Bosnia.Further elaborating on his historical perspective, Rotim claimed that the peoples of Yugoslavia shared a single language and that distinct national identities were "artificially created" by religious leaders and intellectuals. He also referenced the 1924 Rome Treaty, asserting that the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes ceded Rijeka and its port to the Kingdom of Italy, with the agreement signed by Nikola Pašić and Benito Mussolini.Concluding his address, Rotim stated that "Croatian history will be written by Croats," explicitly rejecting interpretations from "Anglo-Saxons," "Greater Serbs," "communists," and their "useful idiots" within the Croatian political and media landscape. He also highlighted that victims of anti-fascism in Tezn still await dignified burial and urged young people to politically articulate their voices.
