Ghanaian Nurses Strike: Health Minister's Statement on Budget Dispute
Ghanaian Nurses and Midwives Strike: Health Minister Addresses Budget Concerns Ghana is facing a critical healthcare crisis as nurses and midwives have embarked on a strike due to the government's failure to incorporate their improved conditions of service into the 2025 budget. The Health Minister addressed the nation, stating, "Your conditions of service are not captured in the 2025 budget. It will collapse the economy if we implement it." He further explained that the government has engaged with the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) multiple times to explore solutions. However, the GRNMA proceeded with the strike despite the National Labour Commission's caution. The Minister assured the public that the government remains committed to a resolution and is working with the Ministry of Finance and Fair Wages to develop a roadmap for implementing the new conditions of service. The strike has caused significant disruption to healthcare services across the country. One nurse, who wished to remain anonymous, expressed frustration, saying, "We've been promised these improvements for so long, and now our patients are suffering." The government's commitment to finding a solution offers a glimmer of hope for a swift resolution to this critical issue.
