Los Angeles, CA – Amanda Mellor, an adult librarian at the Los Angeles Public Library’s Central Library, has been recognized by Library Journal as a 'Mover and Shaker' for her dedicated outreach work with individuals experiencing homelessness and other life instabilities. Mellor, who holds the unique position of Persons Experiencing Homelessness Outreach Librarian, plays a crucial role in connecting vulnerable community members with essential library resources. Her work extends beyond the library walls, as she actively engages with the community, signing up individuals for library cards and informing them about the array of free programs and services available. Mellor emphasizes the importance of showing up for the community and ensuring that the Los Angeles Public Library is a supportive resource for those in need. 'One of my favorite parts about this position is showing up for the community and letting them know that the Los Angeles Public Library is there for them and that we want them to succeed and feel supported,' Mellor stated. She expressed gratitude for the recognition, highlighting that it formally acknowledges the vital work many library professionals perform informally across the country. 'It means that this type of work, which library workers around the country are doing everyday informally, is being formally recognized,' she added, expressing hope that more positions like hers will be created in library systems nationwide.
