Guatemala Resumes Construction of Maximum-Security Prison in Masagua
Construction of a maximum-security prison in Masagua, Escuintla, Guatemala, has been resumed after facing delays under the previous administration. The project, initially conceived during the Giammattei government, is now being revived under President Arévalo. The planned facility will house 3,000 inmates across seven blocks. Funding is secured through a loan from the Central American Bank for Economic Integration (BCIE). According to a government official featured in a recent video report, "These processes are extremely complex, as they are the result of financing from an international bank loan." The government is working to address administrative challenges to ensure the project's timely completion. The anticipated completion date is expected to be announced in the coming week. This renewed focus on prison infrastructure signifies a commitment to improving Guatemala's security situation.
