Lima Airport Delays Pedestrian Access: Safety Concerns Delay Official Opening
Lima's New Airport: Pedestrian Access Delayed Amid Safety Concerns The highly anticipated opening of the pedestrian access to Lima's new Jorge Chávez International Airport has been delayed due to safety concerns. Currently, pedestrians are forced to use temporary vehicle access bridges, creating a dangerous and inconvenient situation for travelers. "The temporary access was not designed for pedestrian traffic," explains Verónica Zambrano, executive president of Ositrán, the organization overseeing the airport's operations. "Its sole purpose was to allow vehicular access." The video from La República shows the current state of the temporary access, highlighting the lack of pedestrian walkways and safe passage. This has led to complaints from airport users about safety risks and inconvenience. Ositrán has decided to postpone the opening of the dedicated pedestrian access until the construction of the Santa Rosa bridge is completed. Zambrano also clarified that while Ositrán is responsible for the airport's user interests, the pedestrian access falls under the Ministry of Transport and Communications (MTC) because it is outside the concession area. Despite the delays, the completion of the Santa Rosa bridge promises a safer and more convenient experience for all travelers to the new Jorge Chávez International Airport, addressing concerns about congestion and safety.
