80% of Lima Homes Vulnerable: Informal Construction Poses Major Earthquake Risk

Lima, Peru – A recent report from Latina Noticias reveals that an alarming 80% of homes in Lima are constructed informally, lacking proper engineering supervision and using inadequate materials, rendering them highly vulnerable to earthquakes. This critical issue has come to light following a recent tremor, which further damaged already precarious structures. Milagros, a resident of a five-story building in a vulnerable district, shared her harrowing experience. "One more step or another tremor, and everything comes down," she stated, pointing to severe cracks throughout her home, which also serves as her family's source of income through rentals. The building, like many others in informal settlements, was constructed without professional oversight, relying instead on uncertified builders. Fernando Lazare, an engineer from CISMID-UNI, explained that districts such as San Juan de Lurigancho, Villa María del Triunfo, Independencia, Los Olivos, and San Martín de Porres are particularly at risk. These areas, often built on unsuitable soil, experience double the seismic movement compared to central Lima. Lazare highlighted the widespread use of "pandereta" bricks, which are prohibited by construction regulations for housing due to their poor seismic resistance. Engineers stress that reinforcing these precariously built homes is challenging, as they were fundamentally flawed from inception. "It's difficult to provide a complete safety reinforcement because it was born wrong," Lazare noted. He emphasized the importance of professional engineering consultation for any construction or reinforcement project. To assist residents, CISMID-UNI has developed an online tool available at www.cismid.uni.edu.pe/virvi/form. Homeowners can input their property details to receive a preliminary diagnosis of their home's seismic resistance, helping them understand the risks and potential need for professional intervention.
