A child protection lawyer issues a warning as new research shows children are at increased risk from 'sharenting'.
A child protection lawyer has issued a stark warning to parents regarding the popular trend of sharing "back-to-school" photos of their children on social media. The lawyer, known as LegallyNik, highlighted the significant risks associated with posting images that inadvertently reveal sensitive information about a child's school. In a recent online video, LegallyNik emphasized, "You do not have to share your children's back-to-school photos. Their school uniform can be clearly seen, their colours can be identified." She further cautioned that simply covering a school logo might not suffice, as distinct uniform colors can still enable identification. Addressing parents with open social media profiles, she urged, "Think before you upload. You may be safe, the internet isn't." The warning resonated with many online users, with one commenter stating, "So many people cover the logo, but people can easily work out what school it is by the area you’re from - or just a little bit of digging around." Another parent shared their personal experience, "I had someone on my Facebook I knew for years, he was caught talking to decoys who he thought were 14 years old, I don't post my children anymore." The sentiment among many was clear: "It’s so scary out there you do not know who is watching." The advice underscores the critical need for heightened online vigilance when it comes to children's safety and privacy.
