Budapest, Hungary – A recent online video has shed light on the stark reality of inflation in Hungary, comparing grocery prices from 2020 to 2025 at a major retail chain, Tesco. The creator of the video, identified as 'Lifeenjoyermate', presented a Tesco receipt from October 2020 alongside current online prices, revealing significant increases in the cost of everyday items. The comparison showed a 1.75-liter bottle of Coca-Cola, which cost 799 Hungarian Forints for two bottles in 2020, now retails for 729 Forints for a single bottle. Cheese-flavored Chio chips, previously priced at 219 Forints, are now 579 Forints. The video creator highlighted this as a 264% price increase. Similarly, Smarties, which were 219 Forints for a 100g pack, are now 349 Forints for a smaller 38g pack. A 42g KitKat Chunky bar, once 189 Forints, is now 349 Forints for a 40g version. The 46g 3Bit chocolate bar, formerly 155 Forints, is now 399 Forints, representing a 257% increase. The author expressed deep frustration over these changes, noting that while prices have soared, his salary has only increased by approximately 30% over the same period. This disparity, he argues, significantly impacts purchasing power and the quality of life for consumers.
