Linda Palej, a flight attendant, highlighted the dangers of this behavior in a recent video. According to Ms. Palej, carrying bags during an emergency evacuation can obstruct emergency exits, damage inflatable slides, and significantly impede the flow of passengers, adding precious seconds to a process where every moment is vital. "A suitcase can block the exit, hit another passenger, or damage the slide, delaying your exit by seconds that can decide your life or someone else's," she stated. Aviation regulations mandate that any aircraft with over 44 seats must be fully evacuated within a maximum of 90 seconds from the first opening of an emergency exit, even if half of the exits are blocked. Ms. Palej emphasized that passengers prioritizing their belongings over safety not only endanger themselves but also everyone else on board. There is a growing discussion within the aviation community about penalizing passengers who disregard these crucial safety rules during emergencies.
