Jinkx Monsoon Challenges Entertainment Industry's View of Drag
In a recent statement, acclaimed drag queen Jinkx Monsoon addressed the historical marginalization of drag performers within the entertainment industry. Monsoon highlighted that drag queens have often been confined to a 'novelty item' status, preventing their full integration into mainstream show business. Monsoon argued that this categorization is 'silly,' emphasizing that drag represents 'the choice to choose your presentation for yourself and to create your most powerful self, to protect yourself out there.' She further pointed out that many mainstream celebrities, through their use of wigs, makeup, and elaborate costuming, are in essence engaging in forms of 'drag.' 'We're all doing it anyway,' Monsoon stated, questioning why drag queens should not fully enjoy the benefits and recognition for their art form. Her comments underscore a broader call for greater acceptance and inclusion of drag artistry across all sectors of entertainment.
