Hungary Warns of Soaring Energy Bills if EU Bans Russian Nuclear Fuel
Hungary's Foreign Minister, Peter Szijjártó, issued a stark warning about potential energy price hikes for Hungarian families if the European Union moves forward with a ban on Russian nuclear fuel imports. In a recent video statement, Szijjártó directly linked this potential ban to the EU's support for Ukraine, asserting that such a decision would have devastating economic repercussions for Hungary. "Brüsszel most már az orosz gáz és olaj mellett a nukleáris fűtőelemek behozatalát is megtiltaná," he stated, translating to, "Brussels now wants to ban the import of nuclear fuel in addition to Russian gas and oil." Szijjártó emphasized that this would cause a significant rise in energy costs for Hungarian households, potentially tripling gas bills and doubling electricity bills. He urged citizens to actively participate in the upcoming 2025 national consultation to voice their opinions on this matter. The minister's statement highlights the complex geopolitical and economic challenges facing Hungary and underscores the importance of public engagement in policy decisions.
