Ipoh Market Makeover: Local Architects Win Design Competition Ipoh, Perak, Malaysia - Beu Tan Architects (BETA), a Penang-based firm, has won a RM30,000 prize in a design competition for the upgrade of the Ipoh Market. The competition, organized by the Ipoh City Council (MBI), attracted 40 participants. BETA's winning design concept, "Breathe, Harness, and Activate," emphasizes natural ventilation and a comfortable atmosphere for market visitors. "Our main vision is to make the market a landmark building, an icon," said Tan Bee Eu, founder of BETA Architects, in an interview. "We want to increase natural ventilation and make it a more breathable space. We want it to be a place for families to hang out, not just to buy fish and eggs." The award ceremony was held at the Ipoh Convention Centre and attended by Ipoh's Mayor, Datuk Bandar Ipoh, Zamakhshari Hanipah. The judges praised BETA's innovative approach, which incorporated sustainable design principles and community-centric elements. The Ipoh Market upgrade is a significant project for the city, aiming to modernize the market while preserving its cultural heritage. BETA's win signifies a commitment to creating a more vibrant and functional public space for the community.
