Dalek Robot Guards Bury Housing Development Site
A three-foot-tall security robot, resembling a Dalek from the popular TV show Doctor Who, has been installed on a field in Bury, Greater Manchester, shocking local residents. The robot, which issues loud warnings and alerts the police, is situated near a public footpath off Scobell Street in Walshaw. Dog walkers and others using the green space have described their surprise at the robot's sudden appearance. "It was quite a shock," said one dog walker. "The siren was incredibly loud, and the voice was so robotic it was almost comical." The land, currently criss-crossed by public rights of way, is scheduled for a massive housing development of 1,250 homes. While the land is owned by developers, it remains accessible to the public via a stile from Scobell Street. A representative from the drilling company working on the site stated that the device is intended to detect movement within the compound, but acknowledged that the sensors need to be adjusted. This incident highlights the tension between development and preserving public access to green spaces in urban areas. The unexpected use of a robot security device adds a unique twist to a common issue, raising questions about the effectiveness and appropriateness of such technology.
