Andorra, August 13, 2025 – Cybersecurity expert María Aperador, known for her online presence, has issued a public warning regarding a growing online scam involving unsolicited packages, commonly referred to as the "brushing scam." The scam primarily targets individuals who receive unexpected parcels, often from major online retailers like Amazon, that they did not order. Aperador explained the two primary methods employed by perpetrators. In the first scenario, recipients may find a QR code on the package. Scanning this code leads to a fraudulent website designed to phish personal information, potentially compromising sensitive data. The second method involves scammers utilizing stolen or acquired personal data to place fake orders and then post fabricated positive reviews on various e-commerce platforms, artificially boosting product ratings and deceiving other consumers. To safeguard against these deceptive practices, Aperador advises the public to exercise extreme caution. "It is crucial not to scan any QR codes found on these unsolicited packages and to avoid contacting any phone numbers provided on the labels," she stated. She further recommended disposing of the package or returning it to the sender, rather than keeping it, to prevent any potential misuse of personal information. The expert emphasized that awareness and careful handling of such unexpected deliveries are key to protecting one's digital security.
