Bogotá, Colombia – Marta Lucía Ramírez, former Vice President and Minister of Defense and Foreign Trade, has publicly refuted President Gustavo Petro's assertions of a border dispute between Colombia and Peru. In a recent statement, Ramírez emphasized the historical and current strong bilateral relationship between the two nations, citing a long-standing treaty of cooperation and friendship. "It is not true that Colombia has any border, historical, or any type of dispute with the government of Peru, much less with the Peruvian nation," Ramírez stated. "Our two countries had a war many years ago, and we have a treaty of cooperation and friendship." Ramírez suggested that President Petro's announcement to relocate the August 7th celebration from Boyacá to the Amazon, ostensibly due to a border issue, is a pretext. She argued that the real reason for the relocation is the government's inability to control internal unrest, specifically widespread farmer protests that have led to roads being blocked in Boyacá. "Why is it not being held in Boyacá? Because everything is out of control," Ramírez asserted. "Roads are taken by farmer protests. Farmers have every right to complain about this government that has not fulfilled any of its commitments to potato farmers, rice farmers, or any sector of agriculture." Ramírez urged the government to address its internal failures and ensure the right of Colombians to mobilize. "The government must respect the roads," she added, highlighting the negative impact on Boyacá and other productive sectors.
