BISHKEK, Kyrgyzstan – Spanish vlogger Marta Oliver Ribas has shared her unique experiences navigating cultural norms in Kyrgyzstan, particularly highlighting the stark differences in personal space and queuing etiquette compared to Spain. In a recent video, part of her ongoing series, Ribas described her initial struggle to adapt to the local customs. "People here tend to stand extremely close in queues, often pushing to get ahead, and they show no embarrassment whatsoever," Ribas stated. She recounted how individuals would frequently invade her personal space, sometimes even brushing against her arm, a behavior she found deeply unsettling at first. "At the beginning, I had to physically turn away and make displeased faces because they were invading my personal space, and it overwhelmed me," she explained. Ribas noted that even individuals with babies do not receive special consideration in queues, a significant contrast to Spanish societal expectations. After ten months, she has learned to accept these differences, recognizing them as normal within the Kyrgyz cultural context. Her observations provide valuable insight into the nuances of social interaction in different parts of the world.
