From Shuri Audition to Ironheart Star: Dominique Thorne's Journey to Wakanda Forever
Marvel Studios has released a compelling behind-the-scenes look at the casting of Dominique Thorne as Riri Williams, also known as Ironheart, in "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever." The footage reveals Thorne's initial audition for the role of Shuri in the first "Black Panther" film, a performance that left a lasting impression on the casting team. Nate Moore, a producer for Marvel Studios, shared insights into Thorne's selection, stating, "Dominique actually auditioned for the role of Shuri in the first movie. And we really liked her, and we thought she was really smart. And she has a great presence, and she is funny and she has a lot of attitude. We remembered that audition." This early impression proved crucial when the team decided to introduce the character of Riri Williams into "Wakanda Forever." Moore confirmed, "She was the first and only call." Thorne herself expressed her excitement about joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe, particularly the opportunity to portray Riri Williams in Wakanda. "It felt very much like stepping into a family, stepping into someone's home," Thorne remarked, reflecting on her experience on set. She also highlighted the significance of her character's presence: "What Riri does for us is open up Wakanda for us to be able to relate and for other people to be able to see other perspectives." The video also features Lupita Nyong'o, who praised Thorne's portrayal: "Riri, I love all that she represents and Dominique herself is extremely impressive. She's the daughter of immigrants. First child to go to college in her whole family. She just graduated from Cornell, herself in the sciences and she's playing this role. I just think that is so freaking cool. Like, it gets me teary eyed." This personal connection to the character's background adds another layer of depth to Thorne's role.
