Florida Cracks Down on Animal Abandonment and Cruelty with New Laws
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis signed into law two significant pieces of legislation aimed at strengthening animal protection. The "Trooper Law" (SB 150) makes it a felony to abandon a dog during a declared disaster or evacuation, carrying a penalty of up to five years in prison and a $10,000 fine. This measure directly addresses the heartbreaking reality of animals left behind during emergencies, as tragically illustrated by the rescue of a bull terrier during Hurricane Ian. The second law, "Dexter's Law" (HB 255), enhances penalties for aggravated animal cruelty, including a 1.25 sentencing multiplier. This aims to deter animal abuse and create a safer environment for pets. The Governor stated, "Florida will not tolerate cruelty to animals, especially during times of crisis." Both laws take effect October 1, 2025, falling within the typical Florida hurricane season. The signing ceremony took place at Big Dog Ranch Rescue, a shelter dedicated to rescuing animals, underscoring the state's dedication to animal welfare.
