Fireball Passes Over Southeastern United States
It’s a bird! It’s a plane! It’s… a bolide!
A large meteor, described as a fireball, exploded over Georgia and South Carolina on June 26, 2025, around 12:20 PM EDT. Hundreds of residents across Georgia, the Carolinas, Tennessee, and Alabama reported seeing the bright flash and hearing a sonic boom. The meteor's entry into the atmosphere was pinpointed southeast of Atlanta, near Covington, with satellite data from the GOES-East weather satellite confirming a bright flash at the time of the event. Reports suggest a fragment of the meteor may have struck a home in Henry County, Georgia, creating a hole in the roof and ceiling. Experts explain that such events occur when a meteoroid, an object in space, enters Earth's atmosphere, becoming a meteor. The intense friction causes rapid heating and ablation, leading to fragmentation and potential meteorite impacts on the ground.
