Guatemala Unearths Three Significant Mayan Sites: A major archaeological discovery in Petén, Guatemala, has revealed three new pre-classic Mayan sites. The Ministerio de Cultura y Deportes announced the findings from the Uaxactún Regional Archaeological Project (PARU), highlighting the sites Los Abuelos, Petnal, and Cambrayal. Los Abuelos features two impressive stone figures, described by project leader Dr. Milan Kobak as "an ancestral couple." "This discovery is truly remarkable," said a spokesperson from the ministry. Petnal, located five kilometers from Los Abuelos, includes a 33-meter-tall pyramid with remarkably preserved murals. Cambrayal is notable for a large stone sculpture. These discoveries offer valuable insights into the Mayan civilization, showcasing the scale and complexity of their urban planning and artistic achievements. The collaborative effort between Guatemalan and international archaeologists, supported by Comenius University in Bratislava, Slovakia, underscores the importance of international cooperation in preserving cultural heritage. The project's ongoing work promises further exciting revelations about this ancient civilization.
