Connecticut Faces Imminent Food Crisis as SNAP Benefits Set to Expire HARTFORD, CT – Connecticut is on the brink of a significant food security challenge as Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits are slated for a nationwide shutdown after October 31st. State Representative Nick Menapace (D-37th District) issued an urgent public announcement, highlighting the severe implications for approximately one in ten Connecticut residents who rely on these benefits. Representative Menapace emphasized the critical deadline for SNAP recipients. "It's really important that anyone who is on the SNAP program here in Connecticut or anywhere in the country know that after October 31st, we are anticipating that all of the benefit cards are going to be shut off," Menapace stated. He further clarified, "Even if you have money on the card, you will not be able to access it. So it's important that you use it before the end of the month." The impending cutoff is expected to place immense pressure on local food pantries. Menapace noted that organizations like Care and Share in East Lyme and Salem are anticipating a "50% increase" in the number of people seeking assistance. He appealed to the public for support, saying, "If you are also someone who has the resources to be able to donate to Care and Share, please do. Your food pantries are anticipating a very big increase, and they really need that help." State and federal officials are reportedly working to address the looming crisis. "We are working here in the state trying to see if we can get more money to these food pantries," Menapace explained. He added, "We've also been trying to see if we can work something out with the federal government, but as of right now, we have not had luck." The representative urged affected individuals to locate their local food banks immediately and encouraged those able to contribute to donate to help mitigate the anticipated surge in demand.
