A couple in North Carolina has transformed a used shipping container into a fully functional and stylish tiny home for less than $15,000, showcasing a remarkable feat of do-it-yourself ingenuity. The project, undertaken by the couple, Kris and Mercedes, began in 2019 with no prior experience in construction or container conversions. 'We decided to build a tiny house out of a shipping container. We had absolutely no experience and we just dove right in,' stated Mercedes in a recent video tour of their unique dwelling. The exterior of the container was intentionally left with a rugged, abandoned appearance, creating a striking contrast with the meticulously designed interior. Inside, the compact space boasts a complete kitchen equipped with a wood-burning stove, a dedicated home office area, a cozy bedroom, and a full bathroom featuring a bathtub. Mercedes revealed that they sourced 'most everything for the build from thrift stores, even the windows, doors, and flooring,' which significantly contributed to the project's low cost. The successful completion of their container home not only provided them with a weekend getaway but also inspired their current lifestyle. 'It's also what prompted us to consider RV life as we loved the tiny house lifestyle,' Mercedes added. This project stands as a testament to creative problem-solving and sustainable living, proving that a dream home can be built on a modest budget.
