Violence Erupts as Activists Attempt Gaza March: Deportations and Injuries Reported
Activists participating in a global march to Gaza were violently attacked and deported from Egypt. The incident, which occurred in Ismailia on June 13, 2025, highlights the challenges faced by those who attempt to advocate for the Palestinian cause. Activists reported being beaten by plainclothes thugs and later detained by Egyptian police. One activist, Komaromy Gergely, a Jewish Hungarian activist living in Portugal, stated, "Dozens of violent thugs in civilian clothes started to attack us, despite the fact that we were totally peaceful." Another activist, Mahiaz from the Canadian delegation, shared, "Unfortunately, despite many efforts in our will to attract public attention, either from our government or general society, was met with hostility from the Egyptian government." Despite being deported, the activists expressed pride in their efforts to raise awareness about the situation in Gaza. The incident raises concerns about freedom of movement and the treatment of activists in Egypt.
