Journalists March for Justice in Chilpancingo Amidst Rising Violence
Journalists in Chilpancingo, Mexico, marched on May 30, 2025, to demand justice for their murdered colleagues. The protest, which occurred on the 41st anniversary of the assassination of Manuel Buendía, highlighted the dangerous conditions faced by journalists in Guerrero state. Pablo Maldonado, a correspondent, reported that "today marks 41 years since the murder of Manuel Buendía, an independent journalist who was investigating drug trafficking." The march also drew attention to three recent cases of verbal and physical assaults against journalists in the region, including threats against photojournalist Anwar Delgado Peralta. Jesús Saavedra of the SNRC Delegation XVII stated, "We marched in a context of generalized violence in Guerrero, but also with concern for recent events." The protest underscores the urgent need for greater protection and safety for journalists in Mexico.
