Reading Teacher Fearful of Keeping Classroom Library, as It Puts Her Job at Risk
A sixth-grade English teacher says she’s afraid to have a classroom library because she risks losing her job if it includes a banned title.
A Texas middle school English Language Arts teacher, who identifies online as MJMarksThePage, has shared a deeply personal and emotional account regarding the impact of new state laws on education within Texas. In a recent video, the educator outlined her significant concerns over legislation targeting Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives and the autonomy of classroom libraries. She detailed that under these new directives, teachers could face immediate termination for engaging in any activities deemed to promote DEI, even extending to the use of students' preferred pronouns. Furthermore, the teacher explained a critical shift in how school libraries operate: librarians are reportedly no longer empowered to independently acquire books. Instead, book purchases must now be approved by designated committees, which convene only biannually. This change, she noted, severely restricts the ability to maintain diverse and responsive library collections. Citing these new regulations, MJMarksThePage announced her difficult decision to dismantle her personal classroom library, expressing fear of potential repercussions from parents who might challenge books they perceive as promoting DEI, regardless of their age-appropriateness. "I am so heartbroken today by the direction our country and the state of Texas is taking. I am fearful of what this means for teachers and students," she stated. Her account highlights the growing anxieties among educators navigating evolving legislative landscapes and their implications for teaching practices and student access to literature.
