Venice, Italy – Residents of Venice have taken to the canals and squares to protest against Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, whose wedding is reportedly taking place in the historic city. The demonstrations highlight growing frustrations over overtourism and the perceived commodification of their UNESCO World Heritage site. In a striking act of protest, activists floated a dummy resembling Bezos down the Grand Canal, drawing attention from onlookers at the Rialto Bridge. The dummy, placed on a large Amazon box, held prop money, symbolizing the protesters' concerns about wealth and its impact on their city. Another significant display of discontent was a large banner unfurled in a prominent public square, featuring an image of Bezos and the stark message: "IF YOU CAN RENT VENICE FOR YOUR WEDDING YOU CAN PAY YOU MORE TAX." The banner was later seen being removed by local police, identified by their "POLIZIA LOCALE" uniforms. These protests underscore the increasing tension between large-scale private events, global billionaires, and the preservation of Venice's unique cultural heritage, which residents feel is being threatened by excessive tourism and commercial exploitation.
