ZAGREB, Croatia – Historical records from the Museum of the City of Zagreb shed light on the centuries-old tradition of the Corpus Christi procession, a pivotal annual celebration for the city’s inhabitants. The observance, deeply rooted in religious custom, commenced with a morning mass, followed by a grand procession that wound through the streets of Zagreb. Participants in the solemn procession included a diverse array of community members, from clergy and military personnel to local artisans and other distinguished citizens. A particularly cherished element of the procession was the involvement of children, traditionally dressed in white attire, who would ceremoniously scatter flower petals along the route, adding a vibrant and symbolic touch to the event. Over the years, the route of the Corpus Christi procession adapted to the expanding urban landscape of Zagreb. Residents living along the procession's path actively participated in the festivities by decorating their homes and public spaces. Windows and streets were adorned with an abundance of flowers, greenery, sacred images, and candles, transforming the city into a festive spectacle. This collective effort underscored the profound significance of Corpus Christi as a unifying and deeply revered tradition within the community.
