SpaceX Starship Reaches Orbit, But Ends in Uncontrolled Re-entry
SpaceX's Starship rocket launched successfully on its ninth test flight on May 27, 2025, from Boca Chica, Texas. The launch was a significant milestone, marking the first time the Starship reached orbit. However, the mission ended with an uncontrolled re-entry, resulting in the rocket breaking apart over the Indian Ocean. SpaceX mission control reported that all 33 Raptor engines ignited successfully. "We see 33 out of 33 Raptor engines lit," a mission control voice stated during the flight. Despite the initial success, the mission concluded with a loss of attitude control and an uncontrolled re-entry. "At this point, we have lost attitude control of the ship and entered into a spin," mission control reported. While the test didn't end as planned, it provided valuable data for future missions. The successful launch to orbit is still a major achievement.
