Organic Grower Reveals Expert Companion Planting Techniques for Pest-Proof Tomatoes
In a recent gardening demonstration, a British organic 'no-dig' grower, known as Nettles and Petals, shared his comprehensive method for planting tomatoes and their beneficial companion plants. The technique, designed to promote robust growth and natural pest control, involves precise spacing and strategic interplanting. The grower begins by spacing tomato plants 45cm apart in a raised bed, digging deep holes to incorporate fresh compost for enhanced fertility. After watering the holes to minimize transplant shock, a large hoop of garden twine is placed beneath the root ball of each tomato plant, anchoring it securely. Lower leaves are removed to prevent soil contact and encourage a stronger root system, with more compost then used to fill the space around the plant, creating a bowl shape to direct water to the roots. An organic straw mulch ring is added for water retention, and the twine is wrapped around the plant to provide support as it grows. Key to his method is the selection of companion plants: marigolds are included for their vibrant color and ability to attract predatory insects while deterring pests. Basil, a classic culinary partner for tomatoes, also helps deter pests with its strong scent. French bush beans are planted for nitrogen fixation and their compact growth. Sweet alyssum, like marigolds, attracts beneficial insects and emits a honey-like fragrance. Finally, chives are positioned at the back of the bed to deter common pests such as spider mites, thanks to their potent aroma. This holistic approach aims to create a pest-proof environment for thriving tomato plants.
