Vatican City witnessed a historic outpouring of faith and national pride on October 20, 2025, as Pope Leo XIV officially canonized Venezuela's first two saints: José Gregorio Hernández and Mother Carmen Rendiles. An estimated 70,000 pilgrims, many waving Venezuelan flags, filled St. Peter's Square, creating an atmosphere described by attendees as one of "inexplicable emotion." The ceremony marked a pivotal moment for the Venezuelan Catholic community, both within the country and among its diaspora. José Gregorio Hernández, a doctor and scientist born in 1864, earned the moniker 'the doctor of the poor' for his lifelong dedication to serving the most vulnerable. His reputation for holiness preceded his death in 1919. Mother Carmen Rendiles, founder of the Servants of Jesus, was also recognized for her humility and unwavering commitment to education, spiritual guidance, and aiding the impoverished. Her legacy of silent devotion continues to inspire generations. Venezuelan pilgrim Gladys Riera shared her feelings, stating, "It's incredible, truly. Our hearts were pounding, and everyone around us from Venezuela had tears in their eyes. It was an inexplicable emotion." Another attendee, Doménico Gregorio Cerpone, expressed immense pride, noting, "I feel immensely proud to have this saint, and to see so many people. I myself am named Doménico Gregorio in honor of the saint. The emotion is very great. Long live Venezuela! This is immense, immense, a total happiness." Pope Leo XIV's homily urged the faithful to emulate the new saints, calling for a renewed commitment to faith and service. The event served as a powerful symbol of hope and unity for Venezuelans globally.
