Brazilian Nuns Go Viral with Beatboxing to Revitalize Catholic Faith

Brazilian Nuns Go Viral with Beatboxing to Revitalize Catholic Faith PARANÁ, Brazil – Two Brazilian nuns, Sister Marizele Cassiano and Sister Marisa de Paula, have captured global attention after a video of them beatboxing and dancing went viral. The unexpected fame has provided a unique platform for the Catholic Church to connect with younger audiences in Brazil, a nation traditionally known as the world's largest Catholic country. The New York Times' Brazil bureau chief, Jack Nicas, visited the sisters in their home state of Paraná to understand the motivations behind their unconventional outreach. Sister Marizele, known for her beatboxing, stated her musical inclination as a spontaneous talent. Sister Marisa echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the organic nature of their creative expression. Their efforts come at a crucial time for the Catholic Church in Brazil, which has seen a significant decline in its following over the past three decades. From approximately 83% of the population identifying as Catholic 30 years ago, the number has fallen to about 57% today. In response, the Church has sought innovative ways to adapt to a modernizing world and regain lost adherents. The nuns are leveraging their newfound visibility to draw attention to their congregation's primary mission: working with drug addicts and alcoholics in their rehabilitation process. They recently recorded their first music video for the song "Vocação," meaning "vocation," which speaks to hearing God's call and dedicating one's life to service. Despite the ironic juxtaposition of traditional religious life with modern viral trends, the sisters view this moment as an opportunity. They aim to utilize their popularity for the benefit of their congregation and to share their message of faith, love, and courage with those who may feel lost.
