Ghanaian Police Chief Builds Bridges with Vulnerable Head Porters
Ghanaian Police Build Trust with Vulnerable Kayayei Community The Director-General of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), DCOP Lydia Yaako Donkor, recently made a significant visit to the Domestic Violence and Victims Support Unit (DOVVSU) One-Stop Centre in Accra, Ghana. Her purpose was to engage directly with Kayayei, the head porters who often face abuse and exploitation. The visit underscores the Ghanaian police's commitment to protecting vulnerable groups. DCOP Donkor's visit was more than a symbolic gesture. She spent time speaking with the Kayayei, listening to their concerns, and educating them about their rights and the support services available to them. "It's crucial that we build trust with these women," stated DCOP Donkor. "They are often hesitant to report crimes due to fear and mistrust. This interaction is a step towards changing that." The Director of DOVVSU, ASP Owusuwa Keremeh, emphasized the importance of the collaboration. "We are committed to working with the CID to ensure the safety and well-being of the Kayayei," she said. "This visit is a testament to our shared goal of protecting vulnerable populations." The event was filmed and shared online, highlighting the positive interaction between law enforcement and the Kayayei. This initiative shows a proactive approach to addressing the challenges faced by this vulnerable group, fostering a more trusting relationship between the community and the police.
