Ukrainian Parents Outraged as 5th Graders Carry Backpacks Twice the Recommended Weight
Kyiv, Ukraine – A recent video shared by a Ukrainian parent, Olgakruvoshey, has ignited a discussion among parents regarding the alarming weight of school backpacks. The video, which quickly gained traction online, shows a 5th-grade student's backpack filled with textbooks and supplies, weighing a staggering 4.2 kilograms. This figure significantly surpasses the recommended maximum weight of 2.5 kilograms for students in 5th and 6th grades, according to official sanitary norms cited in the video. The parent demonstrated the issue by attempting to lift the overloaded backpack, revealing that one of its straps had already torn under the strain. "I barely managed to carry it to the bus today," Olgakruvoshey stated, expressing profound frustration. "This is not a backpack; it's a burden for a child." The video's comments section quickly filled with similar experiences from other parents. One user lamented, "Our child has 7 lessons, and books for every subject, plus food and water; they can barely carry it, and they're only in 6th grade." Another parent shared, "My son's backpack weighs 5 kg in 5th grade, and he himself weighs 25 kg. What should I do?" Concerns about children's health were prominent, with comments like, "Then children's backs hurt and they get scoliosis." Many parents suggested alternative solutions, such as electronic textbooks or leaving physical books at school, similar to practices in other countries. "My child's health is more important. That's why he carries a tablet. All textbooks are downloaded," one parent shared. The widespread concern highlights a systemic issue that parents believe needs urgent attention from educational authorities to safeguard children's well-being.
