WARSAW, Poland – The Ministry of National Education has announced significant changes to the physical education (WF) curriculum set to take effect from the 2025/2026 school year. The new regulations aim to promote physical activity among students and address rising rates of overweight and obesity. Under the revised curriculum, there will be a greater emphasis on outdoor activities, regardless of weather conditions. Schools will also be encouraged to introduce a more diverse range of sports disciplines that can be practiced during PE lessons. A notable change allows students who prefer not to participate in traditional team sports to fulfill their physical education requirements through alternative activities, such as walking or tracking steps, provided these activities are properly documented and presented to their teachers. For primary school students in grades 1-3, compulsory fitness tests will be introduced. Additionally, students in grades 7-8 will engage in exercises specifically designed to prepare them for potential future service in uniformed professions. The Ministry states that the primary goal of these changes is to encourage students to embrace physical activity and develop a lifelong appreciation for it. The announcement comes amidst a growing concern over the increasing percentage of students with overweight and obesity. In response to this trend, a petition has been submitted to the Ministry of National Education, advocating for the introduction of two hours of physical education daily across all primary and secondary school grades.
