Historic First: American Cardinal Elected as Pope Leo XIV
Vatican City – In a momentous event for the Catholic Church, Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, an American, was elected as Pope Leo XIV. This marks a significant shift, as he is the first American-born Pope in history. His election follows the selection of Pope Francis, the first Pope from the Americas, also from a religious order. The Vatican confirmed that Leo XIV is the second consecutive Pope from a religious order, the Order of St. Augustine. This choice is noteworthy given the significance of religious orders within the Church's structure. In his first address from the balcony of St. Peter’s Square, Pope Leo XIV offered a simple yet powerful message: “Peace be with you all.” His election has been met with global interest, highlighting the continuing evolution of the Catholic Church's leadership.
