Swiss Village Buried by Glacier Collapse: One Missing After Evacuation
Blatten, Switzerland, was struck by tragedy on May 29th, 2025, when a glacier above the village collapsed, burying approximately 90% of the town under tons of ice, rock, and soil. Around 300 residents were evacuated earlier in May after geologists warned of potential danger. Despite the evacuation, one person remains missing. "The village has been all but lost under the debris," stated Blatten's mayor, Matthias Bellwald, in a press conference. Search and rescue efforts were temporarily suspended due to unsafe conditions. The event highlights the risks associated with glacial movement and the importance of early warning systems in mountainous regions. The international community is monitoring the situation and offering support to the affected community.
