New gardeners seeking organic pest control solutions can find valuable insights in a recent online video by gardening enthusiast Dominique-PharmUnique. The video highlights companion planting as an effective method to naturally protect crops from insects without resorting to pesticides. Dominique-PharmUnique demonstrates her raised garden beds, showcasing how she interplants collard greens, Brussels sprouts, and cabbage with onions and garlic. "The smell of them are gonna keep bugs away from eating up your collards and your cabbage plants," she explains, emphasizing the natural repellent qualities of these aromatic plants. Further into the video, she introduces nasturtiums as a 'trap crop.' She points to a nasturtium plant with distinctive round leaves, noting that pests are attracted to it, diverting them from more desirable vegetables. "The pest will be attracted to the nasturtium plant and it'll stay away from your collard, in your cabbage or whatever else you're growing," she states. An added benefit, she points out, is that nasturtiums, including their flowers, are edible and can be used in salads. This organic approach offers a sustainable way for beginners to manage garden pests.
